Diaulos, Hippios, Dolichos

Greek festivals included several short-distance runs, such as the diaulos and hippios pictured here.

Also included was a long-distance run called the dolichos, depicted to the right.

The diaulos and hippios were two and four stades in length, respectively.

No event was comparable in length to a modern marathon.
